Old friends

Some background on how the JBay Recycling Project started:

After the presentation by Marilyn van der Velde, from Hermanus (www.swop-shop.za.net) at the Jeffreys Bay Rotary club, three ladies who attended the presentation were so taken with the idea that they convened a meeting in October 2010 to investigate the possibility to start a similar project in Jeffreys Bay. Salomien de Klerk was invited to attend the meeting on behalf of Rotary and this is some of what was discussed at the meeting:

  • The meeting was attended by 15 persons, all connected to Supertubes Foundation and/or Spirals studio.
  • A brief introduction to the project was given as well as what would be required.
  • The Supertubes Foundation already had ties with a recycling firm, with the containers at the park and Enviroman collecting from them every day.
  • Salomien stated that Rotary wanted to be involved in this project, especially in the start-up phase. Rotary’s administration structure, knowledge of the schools and principals would prove to be valuable ways to contribute to getting the project of the ground. The Rotary name also added weight to requests for funding from businesses. Rotary also contributed financially to the project.

In February 2011 the first Recycling day was held with the help of Rotary, and now in 2014 we are officially a Non-Profit Organization going from strength to strength.
