OUR STORY

OUR

STORY

With the support from our community and people like you, we've been turning trash into treasure for 10 years.

In January 2011, with assistance from Rotary and the Supertubes Surfing Foundation we held our first day of trading as the JBay Recycling Project. 10 Years later we are now an established Non-Profit Organization going from strength to strength.

The project came into being following a presentation by Marilyn van der Velde (www.swop-shop.za.net).

Our mission is to alleviate hunger and provide access to basic essentials for children, while simultaneously cleaning up the environment and educating the youth about the importance of a healthy environment. The effectiveness of the project has been proven and countless children and households have benefited from this community project.

An average of 200 children collect an average of 1.8 tonnes of recyclables from the streets and beaches of Jeffreys Bay every week. This trash is weighed and then converted into an imaginary currency called “Mula” which the children can then spend in our shop. The prices of products in the shop are determined on the basis of necessity.

The project is run with the help of volunteers from the community. Our amazing volunteers give up their time and energy to assist the project in various ways, from buying stock, setting up the shop, making clothes and blankets, admin and media liaison work and also by assisting the children who participate in the project on Mondays (Recycling Days).

No volunteers are remunerated by the Project, and aside from essential running costs, all the income generated from the sale of the recyclables, as well as all donations are used to stock the shop.

In the 10 years that we have been operating we have recycled over 750 Tons of trash and received approximately 75 858 individual visits from children.

The JBay Recycling project operates every Monday during the school term, from 1pm until 4pm. (weather permitting… but knowing the impact we have, it takes a lot for us to cancel a day of trading).

We always welcome new volunteers, and if you feel you could or would like to assist us in any manner… please get in touch.

We welcome donations of any kind, financial as well as anything that would benefit the children we nurture and educate.
